A couple weeks back my RCA 52" Rear projection turned off while I was watching it. It took me about 10 tries to get it to come back on. Tonight when I tried to turn it on I heard static then it went off then back on (never gave a picture) and went back off. I smelled something burning so I unplugged it and am now asking for help in finding out whats wrong and any idea how much to fix it.

  1. It isn't a high voltage problem (shorted flyback transformer or horizontal output transistor) unless the TV is a CRT projection TV.

If this is a DLP projection TV, the static sound and burning smell might be related to the lamp module or its power supply (actually not high voltage but high current).

Either way (either projection technology) it will probably cost several hundred dollars to fix, unless it is something really simple in the DLP power supply.

  2. Not an uncommon set of symptoms pointing to a shorted flyback transformer, and probably a shorted horizontal output transistor, both of which are in the high voltage section of the TV.

    If this is correct:

You will want a pro and it will likely cost you $400 to $500.

Keep in mind that this is a total guess. I've obviously not looked at your TV and wouldn't stand on this diagnosis without some test readings. This is just a best guess based on years of repairing the darn things.

    Edit:

Qlink is right, if you have a DLP my diagnosis is incorrect. I assumed (never a good thing to do) that you have a old fashion tube-based rear projection. Your symptom is in line with those models perfectly, but I've not seen it in DLP. Still, if you have a DLP, disregard my diagnosis.

  3. sounds like you shorted it out, shouldn't be expensive to fix unless it melted something important.
