Are they some kind of minning operation

the first numbers are how far north of th equator you are ie 53 degrees 2.138 minutes north and the second is how far west you are of gmt  you are! each degree is divide into 60 minutes, each minutet is equal to a mile, each mile is divided buy 1000, that how you can tell where someone is on the planet to within a metre using gps which use three stationary sattelites fixed at specific spots around the globe !

This area is heather moor land.

The marks are drainage cut years ago when people tried to drain the moors for sheep etc. Bands where there is no heather.
