I am setting up a 55 gallon fresh water aquarium, and bought a Marineland Penguin 350 power filter. Do you think we will also need an under gravel filter as well?

  1. It's not required and it you plant on having live rooted plants it isn't a good idea.  They work really well at keeping your gravel clean but there is too much draw through the slats for plants to root and do well.

  2. For freshwater, under gravel filters are seldom a "need"; however they are always extremely beneficial to extend the amount of time needed between tank cleanings, particularly if you are going to have live plants.

While the power filter is a fabulous and nearly indispensable tool for keeping tank water nice and clear, you can still run into problems with waste accumulation in the substrate.  This will of course vary greatly depending on how many fish you intend to put in the tank as well.  If you are planning on a planted tank, I would definitely recommend the under gravel to avoid having to disturb the plant as it takes root in the gravel.

I've always had much better luck with plants if I also incorporated the under filter beneath a nice deep (2 inches or so) gravel bed.

  3. if you want

but most plants wont survive with under gravel filters

  4. under gravel filters required for fresh water aquarium. It collects the fish waste inside the filter that makes the water clear

  5. No. Underground filters are not efficient and create more work in the long run by trapping "dirt" underneath.

More aquarists are no longer supporting the use of under gravel filters.

Above mounted filters are the best most effective.
