Question:

55 Gallon Oscar Tank Need a better filter?

I have a 55 gallon aquarium that has one tiger oscar in it. Right now there are two 30-60 gallon aqua-tech filters filtering the water. Now that my oscar is about 7 inches the filters cant keep up and im tired of changing the filters every week. What kind of filter would work best to keep up with a messy oscar? What about a canister? Will just one do the trick or do i need two? Price is not a concern. What are great brands to trust and well worth my money? Thank you for the help

  1. what i do is i put a filter in and then put cotton balls behind the filter cartridge and change the cotton every week or so. and it works very well, i change my filter every month now instead of every couple weeks.

    hope this works 4 you!

  2. I would go with a Rena filstar xp3. U could probably get away with the xp2, but the xp3 is way more bang for ur buck and has more trays for filtering media. I recommend using lava rock instead of bio balls... much cheaper and works just as good.  I have a 90, a 125 and a 150 all with Rena's that have been on for years and I absolutely love them. Maintenance is a breeze and are all next to silent. Shop around on-line and u can find them at a great price. I have had much more luck with these simple canisters than with filters that cost twice as much.

  3. Most people I know suggest the Aqua Clear brand. Try the Aqua Clear 110 for your tank and it should keep it clean.

The good thing about aqua clear is more water has to go through the filter and not around it, so it gets more of the particles out of the water.

I don't know much about canisters, but many people have recommended Fluval canisters.

Also, if your water is getting cloudy, you might be experiencing a mini-cycle from changing the filters. You should only rince those in tank water. You shouldn't replace them move than 1x a month. Since you have 2 filters, you could stagger and replace each one every other month.

  4. i have a 55 gal with 2 oscars and 2jack dempseys and a pleco. all i have for a filter is an aqua tech 60 and it keeps up just fine.

  5. aqua clear are great you dont even have to change the filters just rinse them out every once and a whill
