Just upgraded to a 55 gallon tank from a 30 gallon tank, I have an aqua clear 70 with is good UP TO a 70 gallon tank 300 gpa according to the box, it has insert for a sponge, a carbon insert and either an ammonia and biochemical insert (Not necessary), also an air stone (will be adding an air strip to replace the air stone) and a heater.

Should I upgrade my filter? I want to add discus to my tank and more fish as of now a few tetras, bala shark, mini cat fish and an algae eater.

if I should upgrade or add a filter so I have two running, what it the typical set up?

  1. Your filter is sufficient for its task, however if you do find that you need/want a more powerful filter i would recommend a Marineland Emperor 400.  It would filter 100 gallons more per hour and it has 2 bio-wheels which culture beneficial bacteria and help keep your water healthier for your fish.  You can find them a petsmart.com for $42.99.

  2. You don't need to upgrade your filter, it is big enough to do a good job in keeping your tank water clean and clear.
