I'm British and proud that my Grandfather fought on the Somme - he came home a hero - he died in the 1960s, having also been a veteran of the Boer War.

RIP to our British, Commonwealth and Empire soldiers who died on the Somme that we shall be free.

    WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

  3. im with u guys the government doesnt want to remember wars for the casualties it wants to remember them for if we won or lost i think a commemoration day would be a good idea

  4. Absolutely agree. Governments don't want us to remember the massive killing war brings.

  5. Being a History Buff, I will watch for the Answer you are looking for on this.

The battle ran from July ~ Novemver 1916

  6. I do not totally disagree with the other comments made but Remembrance day was instituted precisely because of the carnage in all the battles of WWI.   This was supposed to be the war to end all wars.

I suspect many of the respondents to this question are in the age group which no longer stand still for the two minute silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

I have served and for many years I would not wear a poppy whilst it had Haig's name on it, although I did donate.   Now it is called The Poppy Appeal, I am happy to conform.

REMEMBRANCE DAY is the day that we recognise the sacrifices made by our soldiers, sailors and airmen in the performance of the difficult tasks which we, through our Government, require them to undertake on our behalf.

I do not see the need to water this down with a proliferation of different memorial days.

  7. Interesting question. It is commemorated annually in Ireland and France.

  8. Why remember mass massacres?  They were sent there by an uncaring state.

  9. I think because the disaster shows the degree of obvious incompetence in the Allied high command which was a hallmark in the way the war was managed.

  10. If these soldiers had been g**s or muslims they would have commemorated vigorously for many years.

  11. The battle of the Somme was a disaster.

Generals in the back line given wrong information is a clasic type of the enemy been prepered.

In this case the Somme the Germans were in waiting for such a mass exodus from the trenches by the tommy and were mowed down by the german machine gun.

Even after days of losing good men, the tommy still thought he could overcome the German.

How wrong this British General was.

Again mown down by machine gun fire.

Next part, bring on the tank.

End of World war one I think.

  12. Because it's in the past and people dont care

  13. i imagine its rolled up into remembrance Sunday - 11 November.

i agree though, should have its own individual day, along with an armed forces day in general

  14. The Blackest Day in the history of the British Army.

They should make the day a national memorial holiday in respect of the dead.
