58th National Hockey Championship 2011: Opening day – Hockey Update
The opening day was lucky for three teams earning victories in the 58th National Hockey Championship 2011 held at Faisalabad on January 28. These teams are Port Qasim (PQ), Habib Bank Limited (HBL) and Pakistan Army.
The fourth match of the day was played by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) against National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) which concluded in a draw.
The PQ won over the Pakistan Television (PTV) on a head-to-head fight with a 3-2 score. The first goal was shot in the seventh minute by Awais Khan, then by Yasir and Ali Zeeshan Khan on the 16th and 67th minute respectively.
The PTV scorers were Zulfiqar on the 11th minute and Waqas Butt scoring a goal in the penalty corner in the 48th minute.
HBL got an impressive victory over Navy with a 3-1 score on the board in the second match of the Championship. Shehzad Nasir shot two goals in the 56th and 62nd minute and the third goal by Rana Zubair in the penalty stroke in the 69th
minute of the match. Shehbaz from the Navy managed to score in the 57th minute.
Army dominated over Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) 5-2. The players who shot the goals were Rizwan Junior in the first minute of the match, Waqas Zafar scoring a goal in the penalty corner at 17th minute, Muhammad Afzal in the 29th minute,
Qasim Ikram slotting in a goal in the 53rd minute and the final goal by Kashif Ali in the 60th minute.
The four matches to be played today are as follows:
Southern Sui Gas Company (SSGC) vs Navy
National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) vs Pakistan Television (PTV)
Army vs Port Qasim (PQ)
Habib Bank Limited (HBL) vs Pakistan international Airlines (PIA)
It will be an exciting tournament as the opening day has showed the tremendous talent and skills by some of the teams and players. Fans of field hockey will be looking forward to the four matches scheduled as the competition heats up. Most of the players
are looking to put in a tremendous performance in an effort to be seen and possibly selected for the national team.
