Question:

5k run tomorrow?

There's a 5k in the morning on Monday that I'm trying to get my dad to let me do. However, I've got my first track meet EVER on Wednesday. I really want to do well in this.

I've only run 3 miles once in my life, and that was with short breaks after each mile. I think I can handle 3 miles, because I do 1 mile for training every day and don't get out of breath, but I'm wondering if I should do a run that's a lot longer than what I normally do 2 days before a track meet.

  1. Here's the thing, pros have discovered that "tapering" workouts before an event helps stamina and speed.  Most serious runners workout/strength train hard during the off season, then the week before a race, they lower their distance and take it easy.  It has worked for me too.  Try taking it easy and have fun!

  2. Ok, here's the thing, I always like to run 5k races a few days before like a 10k or something, but it might just get you more tired for your track meet.

I'd say that if you have a really relaxing rest day the day before the track meet, you should be fine, though.

  3. It's definitely something you need to train for.  Really, I would consult your track coach who trains you for the meets (more specific to what you're racing in the meet).

My husband runs, but he'll train for marathons if he does.  He'll run 3-6miles 3-5 times a week when starting to train & works up to like 12-20miles, but I think only runs the actual 26.2miles on race day.  He also combines other endurance tests (speed drills, high-kicks, etc that you learn in track) to better prepare for the terrain.

You should be fine running it since you run everyday moreso as long as your run at the meet is less than 5k.  Really, if you don't get out of breath running 1mile everyday...it's probably time to increase distance &/or speed.  You're ready to move up!  Good luck!
