  1. 5mw is not a very powerful laser .. so you're right, but that doesn't inhibit standard uses and that doesn't mean it isn't dangerous so please don't go shining it into your eye or someone else's eye. You shouldn't have any reason to get a high output laser. What are your applications?

There are several classes of lasers out there they are categorized as 1A, 2A, 3A

There are higher power lasers in categories: 3B, 4

These lasers are rated for safety reasons. Anything above a 3A laser can cause damage to your eyes. The concentrated power is so strong that if you were to get hit by a laser in your eye (class 3B or 4), your blink response wouldn't be fast enough to prevent damage.

In amateur astronomy, class 3B green lasers are used to point out stars in the sky and constellations. Your 5mw pen laser can serve this purpose as well. Green lasers are great for using in pitch black as the spectra is better suited then red. Red is preferred in lighter conditions and blue is used because it's cool! The only difference between color is the frequency at which the solid state laser is set at.

  2. probably made in china like mine was.  Mine lasted a week.

If you want to know about lasers go to laserpointerforums.com.

pro 5mw can be shined somewhat safely at eyes.

  3. Batteries will last longer, and people won't immediately become blind if you accidentally shoot it in their eye...

Personally I would still prefer one with higher power, one that makes a bright dot that's easy to see in room lighting.
