5th grade math homework help-rounding up?

I'm a parent that has forgotten...ANYWAY,

1) To the nearest ten thousand:

9,468,354

2) To the nearest hundred million

301,426,999

3) To the nearest 10

834,290,776,359

This is just 3 of 12 questions, I need to know how to explain the rounding up to her.

  1. To round something to the nearest place, you look at the place one to the right. If it's four or lower, you change that digit and all the others to the right of it to zero. If it's five or above, you change that digit and all the others to the right of it to zero, and raise the original place's digit by one. So #1 is 9,470,000, #2 is 300,000,000 and I can't see what you're asking for with #3.

    basically, you find the number, and if the number to the right of it is 5 or more, round the original number up, but if the number to the right is 4 or less, round the original number down.

    example:

    38 would round to 40

    32 would round to 30

    once you have done that, you should have all zeros to the right of the original number. for number 1, you had to round to the nearest ten thousand, so you round that, but the numbers to the left stay the same, like 4 stayed the same. for number 3, since you only had to round to the tenths, everything to the left of the 6 stays the same.

    example:

    round to nearest one hundreths:

    starting number: 1,234,567

    rounded to: 1,234,600  <----the numbers to the left of 6 stayed the same, and the numbers to the right became zeros.

    The tens digit is rounded up because the units digit is 5 or above.

    a number that is 5 or above, gets rounded up.  a number less than 5 is rounded down.

    the placement (tens, thousands, ten thousands, etc) is something you may want to study to refine where those placements are.

    if the number in the place before the place you are rounding to is 5 or larger you round up, if it is four or lower you round down
