Hey. I am so confused with the 6-2 rotation. I am a right side usually and I am NEVER in front row. Always just back row. If you could please help me to get this rotation down it would be super!! Thank you. Please hurry. I have to go in about 45 minutes!!!

  1. Someone in the right-back position in the 6-2 IS the setter. The setter is always the R-side player (not OH, and not MB) that's in the back-row at the time. As you rotate, you will either shift over to right-back if your team is serving, or come up to set if your team is receiving.

If you're subbing into the back row, and you're NOT the setter, then you probably have a diff position, not R-side. The person who you're replacing when you sub in, do they play OH or MB? In the back row, that should determine where you'll play. If you sub in for the OH, then most likely, you'll play back left on def.. if you sub in for the MB, then you'll be middle-back.

  2. The idea of the 6-2 is that your setter is always a player from the back row. If you know the positions on the court, numbered 1-6 where the server (back right) is always #1, and the back middle player is # 6 with the numbers going counter-clockwise, it's easier to explain.

You have two setters in the lineup... but only one is on the court at a time. Your setter starts in the one position, then on rotations moves to 6, then 5.

When the setter would go into the front row, he is subbed out for a hitter and a new setter takes the #2 player's spot so that the new setter is serving from #1 and is setting from the back row.

This allows you to have 3 front-line hitters available on every play.

So, when the setter would normally become a front-row player, there are two subs: the setter is subbed out for a hitter, and a hitter would be subbed out for a new setter.

** Edit - mynameisken is incorrect. Anyone on the floor can be the setter. If you sub in for the person rotating into the back (position #1) you can be the setter, or you can move over to play the 6 while the 6 becomes the setter... in a 6-2 rotation, 6 is the number of hitters you will have in one rotation, and 2 is the number of setters. In a 5-1 for instance, there is one setter for the entire rotation, so while that person is in the front row, only 2 hitters are available, hence only 5 hitters in a given rotation.
