can you play the 6-2 setup when the setter sets from the backrow, two middle hitters, and two outside hitter, with only 6 people and no subs?

  1. Yes.  The only reason that there are usually subs in a 6-2 rotation is to sub out a middle in the back row because of their usually weaker passing abilities.  Otherwise, a 6-2 is designed to not need any subs.

    This is assuming you have a second setting too.  The setter in the front will function as the opposite/weak side hitter.


  2. Yes.

    The "6-2" means that all 6 players will have the opportunity to hit when they are in the front row, and that you have 2 designated setters that set after they penetrate the front court from the BACK row.

    If you have your 2 designated setters setting when they are in the FRONT row, they are not "available" to hit, so you really only have 4 hitters, so that's a "4-2" system.

    4-2 is common at beginner/medium levels, 6-2 is a bit more advanced but pretty common at senior high level, and if you have one dominant setter you might run a 5-1 where that player sets all the time.
