I have 5.1 capable headphones. Due to the way they plug into my computer, I can't enable Dolby 5.1, but I CAN enable 6-channel sound.

What Is The Difference?

  1. Well, 6-channel sound is exactly that.

5.1 has five channels for normal audio (LF, LC, RF, LS, RS).

The .1 in your 5.1 is the added channel specifically for your sub-woofer.  In the "old" days, an extra sub-channel was needed, due to the limited dynamic range of analog recording equipment.  Now dynamic range is better, but the LFE (low frequency enhancement) channel is still cool to have.
