64-degree wedge or gap wedge?

Hello. I need to know whether I should use a gap wedge or an X-wedge (64-degree wedge). I've got a handicap of 25 and I have 14 clubs. I have a SW, PW, a lob wedge, and an X-wedge (yes, I do like wedges). Should I replace my X-wedge with a gap wedge?

  1. The problem I found with the 60+ wedges were, I had no consistency. Full swing 60-90 yds. I f you can play all those wedges. You can be awesome. Good Luck

  2. There are many more options with a gap than a 64. If you are in need of a 64 wedge, just open the face of your gap or sand wedge (which won't be that often). You can fill in the distance between your PW/48* and SW/56* with your AW/52* and still make it work like a lob wedge when needed. Good luck

  3. Well, I've had experience with both. I used to own a gap wedge last season. I didn't have it long, but it was good. I was hitting some solid full shots, and it was good around the green. One day, I lost it on the course. It didn't turn up, so I decided to replace it with a lob wedge. I ended up with a 64* wedge of the same model as the gap wedge. I was 13 and didn't know how to use a wedge like that,so I put it away with little of the season left. I had decided to read into it and put it back this year. What a difference. I'm no Mickelson, but I've hit some great short game shots with it. It's great because it's easy to get it high and land it soft. Just put the ball forward(nearly driver forward) in your stance, open the face a little, aim to the left a little, and take a pitch-like swing. Also, you can swing really hard and get your shots completely lofted without going a lot  farther. If you need full shots, put the ball just forward of center and take a smooth, steady swing to give the grooves time to react. Swinging it hard makes it roll-up the face and go short, which is fairly reliable around the putting surface. Overall, I'd recommend the X-Wedge because it's really good for your short game, which is very important.

  4. Sorry to inform you but a 25 handicap golfer should be learning to develop a golf swing instead of thinking of mastering the most difficult club in the bag. I realize that 64 degrees represents a talking point. Golf is not a case of talking , but doing. After you have developed some semblence of proficiency for the game( getting to a 15 handicap or less)  limit the number of wedges  and get better with those you presently own.Phil's mastery of the wedge comes from years of experimentation and practice.

  5. It all depends on your game and where you need the distance or shots from.....Personally, I use 4 wedges.   Gap -L,   but if you already are using an X (64 degree Lob)  why spend money on something you already have.  I use a 60*.

  6. i think you should . the 64 degree is a very difficult club to use . takes constant practice . put gap wedge in . purchase 64 . practice till pefect , then add to your bag .
