okay so im goin down the highway at about 100mph and my rpm's drop rapidly, i figure out of gas= so i get some gas and attempt to start it and it misses and rocks back and forth hard and squeels and squeeks? well i get it home and the single points are obliterated i replace them and the engine kinda knocks and squeels? adjustable valvetrain is ok, pushrods good... didnt look any further than that, covered it up to sit... im thinkin it overheated and maybe spun a bearing? do i start with compression tests or??? just rip the d/-\mn thing apart

  1. id run a compression test on it ,but its not going to tell you if it spun a bearing in it or not, tearing it down is the only way to find out for sure whats going on with that one,440,s  wasn't well known for spinning bearings so unless it was low on oil you shouldn't be having bearing problems with it,unless its really high mileage, good luck

  2. It's painfully obvious you have more car than you can handle so sell it before you hurt someone.

If you're running 100 MPH and not watching your gauges, you're being foolish in the least, temp gauges don't just "pop" to "hot" instantaneously.

More than likely you have a spun bearing or a failed oil pump that has caused bottom end damage.

  3. I would start by pulling the oil pan. Sounds like you spun a crank or connecting rod bearing.

  4. If you think maybe you have a  bottom end (rod or main bearing, oil pump, et.) issue, drain and examine the oil first, oil pump is external to the engine so if questionable, it is an easy check also.

A compression test may or may not give you enough info , another quick check is the timing chain, check timing marks and distributor rotation, just to make sure everything is still spinning and aligned correctly.you may have twisted the oil pump drive shaft off, lost oil pressure and , well........  need I say any more,

Did you notice a loss of oil pressure, and what were you doing cruising at 100mph, don't you know that's a violation of the clean air act!! LOL you likely caused a wind storm somewhere.

  5. Yes do the compression test now and check you oil and water for signs of a head gasket leak that might have led to overheating,

but dont feel to bad I have a 69 Charger RT, 426 Hemi, 4 speed, Posi,

Heartbreak story that would make you cry.

  6. i'd start with a compression test.

no point pulling it down if you don't have to, and once you've got it apart and you want to do a compression test its too late.
