  1. Sunrises and sunsets are red because the shorter wavelength of blue and green light will scatter more than the longer wavelengths of yellow and red light. This gives the sky a blue appearance when the sun is higher in the sky. Conversely, when one looks towards the sun, one sees the colors that were not scattered away — the longer wavelengths such as red and yellow light.

As a result when the sun is near the horizon, the volume of air through which sunlight must pass is significantly greater than when the sun is high in the sky thus leaving us with a red sun. When the sun is higher up, the volume of air through which the sunlight must pass is less thus leaving us with a yellow sun and blue skies.

  2. Nothing's wrong with the Sun.  For some reason there are some aerosols in the atmosphere where you are, such as dust, smoke, etc, that causes the Sun to appear more reddish when it is low in the sky.  Perchance are you in California?

  3. it's basically about what's happening to the light on the way to your eye. when the sun is low on the horizon the light has to go through much more atmosphere than when it's high in the sky and it acts like a prism of sort.

other factors are humidity, clouds and if you're by the sea.
