It's a toss up between having a long board for easier paddling and stability, and having a shorter board to duck dive easier.

I would suggest at least a 6'6. Beginners often buy shorter boards because there are more available, but anything shorter than 6'6 would be hard to learn on.

Also, the thickness of the rails are very important, get a board with nice thick rails. That should add to the boards buoyancy hence easier paddling + stability.

a 6'8" is not a long board.  If you want to learn to surf, and you can handles a month of frustration while building the muscles needed to really get on a wave, then go with a 7'6" board.  this is not necessarilly considered a long board, it's more in between.  Now if you are not living in Hawaii, and you're local spot is filled with half the population of L.A., and you are just learining, then get a 9'0" to start, and at least 2" 5/8 thick. this is where you can catch your waves the first day, get your balance, get a feel for the waves, all the while building the stamina neede to surf.  once you have these you can always go shorter.

I learned on a 9'0" soft top (I'm 6'0" tall).  There's a good chance you'll fall and hit the board your first time so a softtop is a safe choice

if you want a long board go for ten feet because it is long and easy to learn on. if you want a short board i have no clue sorry :(

If you want to have some maneuverability and not just go straight on a longboard, i suggest a 6'8 fish with some extra width and thickness.
