  1. It depends on how much running you're doing now.  If you aren't doing any, go to a track and see how many times you can run around it.  Go twice a week and try to increase your distance every time until you get to 6K.

If you can already run 6K but just want to improve your time, there are several methods you can use.  One is to do speedwork, where you time yourself running varying distances, like alternating fast and slow laps, or repeating sets of four fast laps and one slow.  The other is to practice running greater distances, so that when you're running the actual race it will seem like a cakewalk compared to what you were doing before.  I would mix it up if I were you.  Do speedwork once a week at the track.  Do a longish run once a week, maybe in a park or something.  Add in a 6K run once a week and you should be good to go.
