6th inning scoring spree blasts the Yankees past the Tigers
The New York Yankees pounced on their series rivals on Thursday to win the game with a score of 11-5. The Detroit Tigers were blown away in the match when the Yanks piled up 9 runs in the 6th inning to put the team far behind the lead.
The Yankees went into the fixture with 2 wins in the last three games against the Tigers, needing just one more to clinch the victory. The previous encounter had seen both teams contest with some dangerous pitching, which saw many hitters get hit. Detroit manager Jim Leyland was ejected from that game and tempers were flying high. However, it was a new game last night and everything started from scratch. New York manager Joe Garrido brought in the young Paul Hughes to handle the pitching duties. And much to the delight of the team, the ball thrower impressed all and sundry as he contained the opposition well to get the 15th win of the season.
The Tigers were, on the other hand, heading into the encounter with two losses in the previous three matches. This was a final chance to salvage the series against the Yankees, but unfortunately, that didn’t come through as the Detroit side was put through a humiliating defeat, despite a fight back in the last three innings. Rick Porcello came into the match as the starting pitcher. Unfortunately, his luck wouldn’t change it marked the 11th defeat of the season. The player has witnessed 10 losses in the previous 11 games. It only begs to be seen whether the 21-year-old needs more training or not.
The match began with the Detroit club hitting the ball to the stands, as Miguel Cabrera smashed a 2-run 405 feet homer to the right centre to get W Rhymes and himself on the scoring sheet for the team in the top 1st.  The Yankees replied in the bottom 4th when Porcello lost his focus and got two hitters on the base. It wouldn’t take long as Mark Teixeira would enter the scoring sheet as Nick Swisher smashed a pitch down the centre of the park for a single. Robinson Cano followed with a two base sprint from the second base when Curtis Granderson also singled to the centre.
With the scores leveled, Porcello was still holding on to his game. However, things got really bad for him in the bottom 6th when the Yankees rallied to add more damage to the Tigers’ morale. Mark Teixeira added the third for the team, running three bases when Cano doubled to the left centre. Cano would later follow into the scoring books as well. His run came off Jorge Posada’s single to the centre. After that, Porcello was relieved by his replacement, Daniel Schlereth.
However, what came as a surprise was the fact that the reliever was immediately taken back for Robbie Weinhardt, who made his way to the mound. The pitcher got a surprise welcome as Austin Kearns doubled to the centre off his pitch, to get both, Nick Swisher and Posada to score. And when Brett Gardner walked, Curtis Granderson got on the scoring sheet as well. The final knock to the reliever’s confidence was dealt by Derek Jeter who tripled to the deep centre. That RBI triple got Kearns and Gardner to score the 9th for the team.
If 7 runs weren’t good enough for the Yanks, another two runs came in the same innings. Eddie bonnie replaced Weinhardt after the last concession. Robinson Cano came on as the third baseman and he made his mark on the critics as he bashed the Tigers’ pitcher for a 2-run 428 feet homer to the centre, getting a total of 11 runs for the team. Derek Jeter got a free sprint to the dugout and that was all the Yankees needed to dent their opponents.
Detroit responded with Johnny Peralta in the top 7th when the hitter slammed a 415 feet homer to get his side to three run. Brandon Inge later scored in the same inning when Austin Jackson singled to the right. The last run would come off a Tigers player and that came in the top 8th as Ryan Raburn got past the last base off Brennan Boesch’s single to the centre for the 5th team run.
Unfortunately, that marked the last scoring initiative as the game ended on Yankees 11 – Detroit 5. One can only wonder whether the Yankees are back to their normal strength. For the Tigers, one can only wonder if the team has what it takes to nudge off the loss and go to the next game looking for a win.
