  1. 6x-8-5x-9=3

    gives you

    x-17=3

    x= 20

  2. Distribute the negative to the second set of parentheses.

    6x-8-5x-9=3

    Combine like terms.

    x-17=3

    Isolate the variable.

    x=20

    Check.

    (120-8)-(100+9)=3

    112-109=3

  3. Remember that a minus sign outside of the parentheses means you have to change the sign of everything inside.  So this is:

    (6x - 8) - 5x - 9 = 3

    Combine like terms and solve for x.

    6x - 8 - 5x - 9 = 3

    x - 8 - 9 = 3

    x - 17 = 3

    x = 20
