7.1 surround sond ,HDMI?

Question

ok i have a receiver that does 7.1 and everything but it doesnt do HDMI will this be a problem when i get blu ray ,will my receiver decode the 7.1 hd

you won't have a problem as far as getting the 7.1 surround from your player. What you need to know is that the sound can either be decoded at your player or at your Receiver. Your player will always output DTS 7.1 because it's a popular accepted format for all 7.1 capable receivers, so it is up to your receiver as far as the quality you want. THUS If you want HD sound... you need to get a player that will decode the HD soundtrack from your Bluray disc and output it in lossy format through the optical cable or uncompressed PCM 7.1 ( i believe this is lossless) also through the optical cable. OR you can make sure your BD player will output the HD soundtrack in bitstream format VIA HDMI 1.3 interface to a receiver that will DECODE the HD soundtrack but then you are talking about 1500+ high end receivers. Realistically i would wait because there isn't enough movie out right now with Master Lossless formats... unless you really do care :-) But the first option is the cheaper way to go (make sure the player can decode the HD sound format you want)

The issue with Blu-ray is not 7.1 by itself, but Dolby- or DTS-HD, which is in effect multi-channel audio, lossless compressed . You can receive lossless HD audio only over HDMI.  

Dolby 7.1 (with lossy compression) should be OK.
