The idea is that you need to isolate the variable and whatever you do to one side, you need to do to the other.  You basically "peel" away everything but the variable.  addition "undoes" subtraction, division "undoes" multiplication, etc.  So, if you have -26, you add 26 to both sides of the equation

-7/16w - 26 +26 = -19+26

-7/16w = 7  now multiply by 16w

-7 = 112w  now divide by 112

-7/112 = w = -1/12

Assuming it is actually -7/(16w) and not (-7/16)w

A good example of when using parentheses is a good idea.

is this which of the following:

-7/(16w) - 26 = -19

-7/(16w - 26) = -19

each one has a different answer.
