Question:

7 month old with constipation?

My son is 7 months old and seriously teething. He hasn't been too interested in his solids because of the teething so he's getting mostly formula. Over the last week and a half he's started to get really constipated. I've been giving him apple juice per the doctor's suggestion at his physical, but what other things can I do to help prevent him from getting constipated? What things can help move his bowels besides suppositories? Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance.

  1. You can try giving him baby prune juice and/or see if he will eat a little pureed prune dessert gerber makes it in the stage one foods , it always worked within 1 day for my daughter :)  just beware that he may make quite a mess in his diaper so i would keep some kind of pants/shorts on him that arnt so nice over his diaper of course hope your little guy feels better

  2. I've got an 21 month old. She gets constipated some times. I've found that giving her gas-x for babies helps. You can buy him some teethingtablets at the store. They work miracles when their teething. I've found out that oral gel doesn't last long. But the teething tablets last a long time.

  3. It doesn't have to be dark Karo syrup.  you can use light karo syrup also.  My daughter did the same thing.  I would put 1/2 teaspoon karo syrup in each bottle I gave here.  it may take a few days to take hold, but it will keep him going once he starts.  be forwarned though, that the first few times, it may stink worse than normal.

  4. Water and Karo Syrup is one way.  I used to have to use a themometer to like "take his temp" to help my son go when he was this age.  SOunds bad, and they might cry, but it worked every time.  Hope this helps and good luck!

  5. My daughter went through a time of constipation and my doctor said 1 tsp. light Karo syrup per 4 oz. formula.  She also said if that didn't work to try pear juice or prune juice.  The Karo worked for us.

  6. Prune juice...which definitely isn't yummy, but Gerber makes some Apple/Prune juice mixed together which my daughter liked. Unfortunately, my daughter's constipation got so bad (she'd go 3-5 days without a bowel movement and when she did have one it was extremely painful and hard), she had to be put on 1/2 tsp of milk of magnesia before bed every night to get things moving.

  7. you aren't supposed to give sugar or syrup to a baby... just give him a little prune juice with maybe a little bit of water. rub or gently tickle his tummy or back so he relaxes a little bit..

  8. We had this problem, but I found that apple JUICE made it worse. Apple sauce however, helped. Get more veggies in him. Put some vaseline in that back end to help him along. Don't give him rice or cheese until he is not constipated. Try mashed or baby spinach and some of the other greens available. There's always prune juice too. Water it down just a little. I don't care for it but our babies didn't mind it.

It's such a miserable feeling that we can all relate to. I hope you get him straightened out very soon. Good luck!

  9. add a little dark karo syrup to his bottle of formula

  10. karo syrup just a teaspoon mixed with 8 ounces of water...

My daughter needed suppositories....she out grew it when she was potty trained !!

  11. Constipation is not the regularity of bowel movements, but the consistancy. A healthy baby can go up to ten days without having a bowel movement and not be considered constipated unless the movement is hard and pellet like.

My daughter would frequently go several days without having a bowel movement and my peditrican insisted this is normal and it's just that her digestive system is maturing and trying to figure things out.

After I did start her on solids, she did start getting constipated (meaning her bowel movements were very hard and difficult to pass)and I just stopped giving her the rice, banana's and apples, because those are natrually binding foods.

I upped the oatmeal, blueberries, grapes, prunes and made sure she had a sippy cup of water with every meal. It worked for a few days, but then when it didn't work I went back to the doctor two more times, before I found something that would help her.

My doctor never suggested kayro sryup or suppositories for her constipation.  Try naturally to fix the problem and if that doesn't work, go back and get something that will help.

    Good luck!

  12. Prune juice.  They make it for babies.  That should clear it up.  Also warm up some water with a little Karo Syrup (old-school remedy).  That should move him as well.

  13. My doctors office suggested Karo Syrup.  1 teaspoon in a couple of ounces of water.
