I am 7 weeks postpartum. I got my first period last week. I had heavy bleeding for 5 days. Then it just stops...nothing, like turning off a water faucet. Then 2 days later...the faucet turned back on and had heavy bleeding for 1 day and now it stopped...for now. Is this normal for your first period after having a baby? This is my 3rd baby and with my other 2 my first period was a normal period just alittle heavy. Usually my periods go from heavy gradually fading to light to nothing. It's never just stopped after being heavy a few hours before. It's weird. I am breastfeeding if that has anything to do with it. I just want to figure this out so that I make sure not to be intimate during my fertile period.

  1. first did they give you any birth control to take? Second breast feeding should make you not have a period.

With my first son I bleed for 8 months cuz of the depo shot they gave me. with this one I bleed for about a week or 2 max and haven't had any bleeding since the end of Feb. I am breast feeding this time around.

If you didn't have birth control given to you I would go to the Dr just to get checked out.

  2. It sounds to me like a recurrence of postpartum bleeding. If you're being to active, too quickly, then even if the after bleeding stopped after two weeks, it can start again, if you you do too much too fast. talk to your OB or midwife

  3. I bled for the whole 6 weeks they give you for recovery. it stopped and i have had my period since APRIL EIGHTEENTH...

I'm so upset by it but the doctors said sometimes that happens... I wish there was some better advice I could give but make an appt if you're concerned, although my appts didn't help me...

  4. Well, not to be... uhum, gross, but I never had much of a period and after the birth of my daughter (I'm also breastfeeding but I don't know if it has to do with that) I am having crazy periods.  Started about a month and a half after she was born.  Very bright and way more than ever.  I would still check with your doctor though and definitely use protection.... unless you want another baby that is.... with all the changes going on, who knows for sure when you're primed for pregnancy.  For me, I'm not willing to take any chances just yet... ;)

  5. I had the same problem for 3 months. My doctor told me that it was my birth control that was causing me to bleed like that. Also, breastfeeding does the same.

  6. I had similar instances with both of my children, but minus the break of bleeding to make me think it was a period. So basically it went full bleeding after birthing, lightening up, then actually getting a break for a day if I was lucky, on again for a few days heavy, then off and so on past the normal time. Then after it finally stopped permanently had a period a couple weeks later!!  I never really thought it o be a period, which is possibly your case, not a period, but your body expressing the rest of whatever that wasn't easily coming out. As for being intimate, I suggest using condoms for the first few month after being given the okay, just because of the unusualness.
