  1. the 700 nitro, it is more valuable, and the ammo is easier to get.

here is what you do, hang it above the fireplace but secure it to the rack discretely.  Attach an alarm to the rack which causes a box you strap to your arm to buzz.  When the home invader is attempting to take your very valuable 700 nitro, you sneak behind him with your trusty 12 guage which is .729 bore, and make him pee his pants

  2. You'd crack a bone or dislocate your shoulder more than likely, unless you are Ross Seyfried or some other expert (I am not joking).

  3. Question:  700 Nitro Express or 585 Nyati?

Answer:  You are kidding, aren't you?  Okay, here goes... The .700 Nitro Express is no longer being made.  If you could find one it would probably be a double-rifle in the ten to twenty thousand dollar range.  You might get someone like Butch Searcy (in Boron, Calif.) to build one for you if you have enough money.  Or you could check with Ruger Firearms and ask them if their Ruger #1 action can handle the .700 Nitro Express round.  If you get the 'go-ahead' have someone build you a barrel around the #1 action and good luck but now you'll still have to find a reliable source for the ammo.  The .700 NE is considered a dangerous-game/elephant gun generally accepted as being on top-of-the-heap.

The .585 Nyate is an 'improvement' over the .577 Nitro Express and is considered a dangerous game rifle like for Cape Buffalo.  The recoil is going to be less than the .700 NE but still in the 100 to 150 lb. range.  For comparison my own .458 Winchester Magnum produces 60 to 70 lbs. of felt recoil at the shoulder depending on the load.

Which is the better large game rifle?  The .700 NE is because it shoots a heavier, wider bullet than the .585 Nyati but either one is an over-kill on all but the largest, meanest critters on this planet.

General home protection?  From what, a charging herd of water buffalo?  Neither one.  Follow-up shots are h**l and collateral damage/liability can be a real *****.

Plinking?  Let me put it this way, when I purchased my .4-5-8 I could still find ammo for $60+ a box of twenty but the average was $100.  That comes to $5.00 a round.  Now .458 Winchester Magnum has gone up to $198 per box of 20 and the .4-5-8 is a puny round compared to the .700 NE or even the .585 Nyati.  I don't do a whole lot of plinking with my .4-5-8 anymore but I still enjoy shooting it.  I guess if you're Bill Gates you can plink with your choice of .700 NE or .585 Nyati.

    Good luck.

  4. And I thought I was sick for wanting a .458 winmag for "plinking".  You can't be serious though, either of those two calibers for home protection, from what? dinosaurs?  If you are serious, I'd suggest something a lil' smaller like a .416 Rigby or .458 Lott, or any of the larger Weatherby's like the .378 or .460, ammo would cost you a LOT less and they have MORE than enough power to take down anything on earth with ease. Well good luck, lol

  5. Personally, I'd not want either for home defense or plinking.

Shooting a rifle that is fully capable of dislocating my shoulder is not my idea of fun.

No rifle that is suitable for big ( i.e. dangerous) game is a suitable home defense cartridge.  Unless you are talking about using it to defend the ramparts of you fortified compound.

The only rifles I'd recommend for home defense are pistol caliber lever-action carbines, especially the Model 92 carbines from Rossi, Browning, and Winchester.  Take your choice of .357 Magnum, which will be easiest on the shoulder but still a respectable short to medium range deer rifle, .44 RemMag, which is a better hunting cartridge, but is useful for home defense using .44 SW SPL ammo, or .45 Long Colt, using standard loads for defense and heavy loads for hunting.
