  1. It depends on the local force policy. There does not appear to be much leeway in many forces in the UK these days because of the publicity the issue has attracted.

  2. I think the majority of drivers exceed the speed limit on motorways which is why the cameras are such good little earners and actually have very little to do with safety

  3. With (nearly) everyone driving slowly because of the cost of fuel these days, plod is finding his revenue down so I suspect that you will get a hefty fine for driving at 70.00001 mph on the M6 or anywhere

  4. The law is 70mph maybe doing that speed will save your licence and even yours or somebody elses life.

  5. It used to be an acpo guideline, to take into account inaccuracies in both dashboard speedometers, and speed guns, but nowadays they're more accurate and the old guidelines either don't apply or are replaced by local policies in some areas.

  6. It still stands as an ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) guideline, however it is just that, a guideline. Police can and do take in to consideration traffic and prevailing conditions.

generally, in a straight line, in the middle of the month (never speed at the end of a month, they have targets to meet!) in dry conditions, youll get away at 78, but the only guaranteed way is, unfortunately, doing 69.99 like the old geezer in the mondeo in the middle lane ;-)

  7. No, it is not true. You can be prosecuted for doing 71mph on a motorway; in theory that is! In reality, you would be unlucky if you got done for it.
