What does this mean, and why is it noisy?

I had a 5400 rpm drive and it died and I got a new one but it is 7200 rpm and much noiser!

  1. I used to have a 7200 RPM hard drive, It was kinda old and breaking down when it started to make loud noises, Then crashed for good


  2. RPM is revolutions per minute. It tells how fast the drive is.

    they spin faster and could be noisy. Vibrations cause this..not much you can do other than maybe using rub washers where the drive screws into the case.

    it could be  a bad drive. Is the noise a clunky or clicking sound? If so it's a bad drive.


  3. RPM is rotations per minute. If you open up your hard drive it looks like a big disk, and this disk spins around very fast, most commonly 5400, 7200, and 10000 rpm. The higher the number the faster your hard drive is able to write/read data. Higher RPM means nosier, but better performance.
