is 720p a big difference from 1080p in terms of viewing Blu-Ray movies? I am using a 32" Phillips and I own a PS3 so I was wondering if I could still see a very high quality movie without a 1080p television that I have seen at stores etc. and since my PS3 can upscale DVD's should I just stick to DVD's instead of Blu-Ray?

  1. There are NO 1080p 32" TVs and there is a reason for that. Nobody can see the difference in that a small display.

Yes, BD discs will be a far better quality than standard def. DVDs. Since you have a player. Rent a movie in both BD and SD and see which one you like best for yourself.

  2. The new issue of Home Theater magazine arrived. It has an article about how an editor slipped a 720 display in among some 1080 displays and let people review them - and the 720 unit came in second over all when the votes were tabulated.

(The 720 unit was a Panasonic Kuro - one of the best TV's available now, but it was only 720).

  3. In the confusing world of TVs today you will see many specs listed on the tags of your favorite electronics store. One of the most talked about is resolution (how many dots or pixels make up the screen; this determines the overall clarity of your picture), the two most common numbers you will see listed are 720p (often listed as 1366x768) and 1080p (1920x1080).

There is a great conundrum right now about the NEED to buy a 1080p set or not. The truth lies in how far away you will be sitting from the set. Several groups have done studies concerning this issue and all have come up with virtually the same results, if you are beyond about 1.5 times the screen size of the set ( beyond about six feet on a fifty inch set) then you will not tell a clarity difference on the set. For the average person (sitting about 8 feet away) you would need a set of 65” to tell a difference between the two.

Blu ray will blow the pants off of any upconverted dvd. The disc themselves are hd vs upconverted dvd where the player is what makes it hd and it will will give you a much more natural looking picture then upconverted dvd.
