720p MKV video Computer problem?

I just downloaded an MKV video file that is supposed to be 720p resolution. I am trying to open it with VLC but the video seems to play for like 2 seconds and then it stops the screen becomes pixilated and filled with artifacts but the sound keeps going. After a few seconds it plays fine for 2 seconds and so on…Is the file corrupt or is my graphics card not able to handle 720p? I have played other video files like DIVX that were supposed to be HD so I am not sure if there is a difference between HD and 720p. I have a 128Mb ATI video card, my screen can definitely handle HD, and it’s connected by a DVI cable. Is MKV just a really crappy format?

  1. yeah, your Pc may not be able to paly back HD, it is actualyl pretty intensive ( and not actually done on the graphcis card, its on the processor)

as HD videoas are pretty big the Pc has to pass it form the HDD to the RAM then to the processor, which cna cuase bottlenecks if your RAm is too smalle, yoru hardrive not fast enough or your processor too slow.

open up task manager (ctrl+shift+esc) and check the performance tab while your palying the movie, if it hits above 80% on all cores then your PC is defeintly stuggling. also check the amount of memory usage, if that raches above 80% you also have a problem.

  2. I'm thinking its the file.  720p is HD, one of the lower quality hd formats.
