  1. You can change the output of the PS3 to 1080i. It will downscale all games and video to 1080i automatically. You don't need anything else.

  2. try using component cables rather than hdmi the signal will be analogue rather than digital and will not carry digital rights managment that is downscaling to 480.

component are the red green blue cables

  3. Look in ur ps3 settings and change it to 720P. If that doesnt work, change the way you connect to ur tv. I recommend component or HDMI.

  4. Hi I have 38'' Philips HDTV/LCD with native 768P & I set my PS3 on 1080i. Yes the PS3 game disk is 720P. Not 1080P. Only the Xbox 360 game disk is 1080P. But, Sony are going to make PS3 game disk to 1080P very soon. And yes I am using HDMI cable too.

Since your HDTV is native 1080i, you should set your PS3 to 1080i instead of 720P. I did try & compare the 720P & 1080i while watching my Blu-ray movies & I like 1080i better. Because when I set my PS3 to 720P, the picture looks grainy pixels. When I set it on 1080i, I have a sharp picture. I hope this helps. :)

  5. Yeah you're stuck in what is known as the "1080i issue" for older TV.

Sony hasn't officially fixed this yet, so select games that only output in 720p and not 1080i or 1080p will revert to SD.  There's a semi-official petition going on at the official Playstation forums.  Not much I can tell you other than join the club.  There's lists of games that have the "1080i issue" if you just search for it online.  Then you can avoid purchasing those games unless you don't mind playing a few of them in SD.

Actually, to be precise, your TV is only receiving a 480p input from the PS3.  TVs only display in their native resolution, so your TV is still upscaling to 1080i, it's just not true HD even though the game can output 720p (HD).

I'm not aware of a device that takes an input and upscales it to then send it to a TV, but you might want to try asking in AVS Forum, those guys are insanely technical about their devices..
