  1. 1080P is the newer technology = better.

The "P" stands for progressive (the type of scan) and the number denominates how many lines are scanned. 1080P means there are 1080 lines scanned progressively, (as opposed to interlaced -every other line - ex: 1080i) 1080P will be sharper (better) than 720P if you are watching Blu-Rays, playing HD games (xbox 360 and PS3 can play in 1080P). However, most TV broadcasts aren't in 1080P yet, they are still in 720P. 1080P broadcasting is the future resolution.

So, basically, if you are just watching TV, you won't notice the difference, as most HD stations are 720P. However, if you are gaming or watching HD disks, then 1080P is better. You can notice the difference between 720P and 1080P, but unless you are a gamer (or are trained in TV/broadcast tech.) , you can't really tell.

Just FYI - Plasma might be cheaper, but unless you are going 50" or bigger, I'd go with LCD. LCD technology is much better in smaller applications, especially with a good refresh rate. Plasma has a tendancy to "burn-in" images. Burning-in images (if you didn't know) means some images are permanently "burned-in" to your screen. (You might have seen some CRT monitors with images still in on them when there is no signal.) For instance, if you watch ESPN a lot, that bottomline, the ESPN at the bottom, remains there most of the time you are watching the channel. In time, that image being there constantly can burn into your TV, keeping a dark representation on that spot forever. Just FYI

  2. I would definately go with the 1080p.

720p is only dvd resolution, where as 1080p is about 5x more pixels. 1080p will keep you top of the line for some time even at hd broadcast standards

  3. 1080p  - You'll get a clearer picture when you have HD devices hooked up to it.

Basically, the two numbers show how many pieces of the picture are helping to make up the picture.  The more pieces making up the picture, give you a clearer picture.

  4. the other guy is wrong DVD quality is 480p but can be up converted to 720p or 1080p or i. but besides that you can't really tell the deference unless your eyes are like special or if the set if over 50 inches but i would still get it in 1080p because it is more future proof and you might be able to tell the difference. the kuro is probably the best plasma many experts recommend it so I'd get it.
