77 Camaro drives like it is floating. Help!?

Whenever I drive my car, it feels as though I'm floating on a cloud. The car still responds to my input through the steering wheel, but any bump or pothole in the road will alter the course of the car. I've been told to replace the shocks, springs, and even bushings but I figured I would ask the internet cause you guys have been right so far about everything on my car. :)

  1. One thing is for sure - you may like new springs, but the springs themselves are not the problem.  The problem is either the shocks or deteriorating rubber parts, of which there are many to choose from (possibly a whole lot of both).

Also, keep in mind that in the 70's, American cars were designed to drive like you were floating on a cloud.  think hard about that before you start spending money.  Some questions to ask yourself:  Is this the only 77 Camaro you ever drove?  What are you comparing it to? The body ridigity of a Camaro is very poor by modern standards.  The cars were half-framed, which is unusual.  Kind of like driving a car hinged in the middle, unfortunately.

  2. The age of the car and it sounds like original parts on suspension...  I would say new shocks, new bushings( polyurethane are great) would do wonders to it. Lots of years making the soft parts wear out. The springs should be replaced too as all F body cars sag when old.

  3. they act like that if you have it in overdrive.it could be the springs and shocks.

  4. I think that car has a front, and possibly rear, subframe. These are attached by bushings that may fail over the years. You should get this checked as their failure is not trivial. Another thing to consider is simple stuff. Tire air pressures not too low. Did this happen after the shocks and springs were changed? They may not be the correct parts for your particular car. While not a race car, that car should feel pretty well planted on the road. Has it always been this way or did it suddenly or gradually become floaty?

    OOPS:

I misread your post. I thought you replaced the springs and shocks. That's all it is. Replace them together or individually they won't last very long. Sorry about that.

  5. It certainly sounds like the shocks.  When you're replacing them, you can check wear on other parts.

  6. suspension of the car or the tires need to be filled or the oil
