$775-million! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sets new worldwide sales record!
The latest sales reports show that Activision’s third installment in the Modern Warfare series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, has shattered the previous opening five day sales record in the entertainment industry.
The record in question deals with how many sales an entertainment product makes in its opening five days. Entertainment products themselves include music, film and videogames, so Modern Warfare 3 did not just go up against other video games but heavyweights
of the film and music industry as well.
To be quite frank, it did not just go up against them, it raced passed them with an ‘Eat My Dust’ sign at the back.
The predecessor to the record breaking modern military first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Black Ops, held the previous record for highest sales in its opening five days of sales. The figure stood at a dizzying $650-million!
Many analysts predicted that Modern Warfare 3 would easily surpass it, yet there were a few who wondered whether Electronic Arts’ return to the core Battlefield franchise would stop Activision from setting a new industry record.
It turns out that the latter were later found eating their words as nothing seemed to be able to stop Modern Warfare 3 from selling a staggering 9.3-million units on its first day alone. The figure continued to rise over the next four days, by the end of
which the total amount of sales amount to $775-million, which for those who are poor at mathematics, is $125-million greater than what Black Ops managed to make.
However, this is nothing new to the Call of Duty series as they have set and broken the same record over the past three years, or as Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard’s CEO, so aptly put it, “Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history
to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment.”
He continued, “Life-to-date retail sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded $6-billion worldwide, which makes Call of Duty one of the most valuable entertainment properties in the world.”
We understand that some of the readers may require a change of pants after reading that previous statement and we wish for them to know that they are not alone.
Activision’s Eric Hirshberg, who happens to be the Publishing CEO, took time out to thank the fans.
“Most of all, I want to thank our fans. They are our toughest critics, and our biggest supporters, and none of this would e possible without them.”
It has been a great year for games with a number of publisher’s claiming that their latest releases have broken their own records as well. Battlefield 3 became EA’s fastest selling game in history and FIFA 12 became the best selling football simulation game,
while Assassin’s Creed: Revelations also broke the launch week sales record for that particular franchise.
