i am wondering if anyone could help me with an issue... i put a 350 in my 78 chevy truck and the eng has a knock.. i took off the oil pan and the rods will move side to side (is that allowed and if so is there a clearnce of a certain amount?). they looked good other than the movement. i checked my old eng and those rods moved as well...so can anyone help with the knock or have any idea what it might be if its not a rod...and could it still be a rod?

  1. pull the main caps and inspect for bearing damage, if that's cool then pull the rod caps and replace one at a time until the damaged bearing shell is located, rub the edge of a penny lengthwise along the damaged crank journa, if it leaves copper you must replace the crank, if not then just replace the damaged bearing shell with a factory replacement..l

  2. My husband said that you can check the timing and ensure the rocker bolt is tightened to the torque specification. he also said that the rods should move up and down, not side by side.

  3. Side to side rod movement is ok, its called "side play" and can be checked with a feeler gage.  Knock could be a rod, piston, wrist pin just to name a few. Check your crankshaft for end play by moving it front to back with a screwdriver, measure movement with a dial indicator or feeler gage (gap at thrust main).  Checking the oil pressure prior to pulling the pan would have been a good thing to do.

  4. wrist pin .crank bearing. connecting rod .cam noise

and yes it as to have some side play

    is it regular or intermittent

saw some guy that change engine but flywheel  was lose

lose flywheel make noise under acceleration  and deceleration

some think to check good luck
