  1. Scratch-on-the-8 rules should be discussed before the game, but generally, scratch on 8 loses whether you make the 8 or not.

  2. Under BCA (world-standardized) rules, pocketing the 8-ball while committing a foul is a loss of game.  Scratching the cue ball is always a foul, therefore a loss of game.  If the 8-ball didn't get pocketed, it's not loss of game.  The opponent gets ball in hand anywhere on the table.  Pocketing the 8-ball on the break is neither a win nor a loss.  Let me just copy and paste the appropriate rules.

    -------

4.8   8-BALL POCKETED ON THE BREAK

If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, breaker may ask for a re-rack or have the 8-ball spotted and continue shooting. If the breaker scratches while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, the incoming player has the option of a re-rack or having the 8-ball spotted and begin shooting with ball in hand behind the head string.

    -------

    4.20   LOSS OF GAME

A player loses the game by committing any of the following infractions:

    1.         Fouls when pocketing the 8-ball (exception: see 8-Ball Pocketed On The

                Break).

    2.         Pockets the 8-ball on the same stroke as the last of his group of balls.

    3.         Jumps the 8-ball off the table at any time.

    4.         Pockets the 8-ball in a pocket other than the one designated.

    5.         Pockets the 8-ball when it is not the legal object ball.

    Thanks. M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

  3. Like the first Aer said, rules on the 8 should be discussed before the game!. where I used to play, they had set the house rules as follows, on eightball games.

On 8 straight in, If you scratch you lose,

on 8 last pocket, if You made the 8 and scratched you lost, if you skretched, without making the eight, I used to like to play, you lose, others played you don,t, with que in hand afterwards

There are too many variations, of rules, to even mention, but something shoulf be agreed on before the game,

Apparentely your friend took advantage of a flexible rule,

probably because he didn't want to lose to a girl, ( no offense to ladies, playing or not), instead of saying I lost.

  4. It.s a loss everywhere but our local pool league. They have made up their own rules.

  5. Forget the guesswork and made up ( bar ) rules

Listen to Straight -Not a loss but a ball in hand foul

  6. There is many Cue sports  including Snooker, Three cushion billiard and Pool.  Pool  has the most number of variety of games including 9 ball game, Rotation, One Pocket, Straight Pool and so on.  There are rules applied on each game but  as far as I know  8 ball game is the only Pool game with disputed rule. 8 ball is played in many countries and the rules is varied from each country.

In general,  the rules goes like this:

    1)  you must pocket all your balls from your group before pocketing 8 ball.

    2) you win the game immediately if you pocket the 8 ball on the break.

    3) you lose game when you commit foul during your last shot on 8 ball   ( i.e.  if you miss the 8 ball,  if you scratch and if you hit other ball first.

remember:  the above three rule are not modified from any country..

  7. In 99% of all places you'll play 8-ball, you lose the game if you scratch on the '8' ball. If you call a pocket and the '8' goes into a different pocket... you also lose.

If the cue ball goes off the table it is also a loss of game, whether you make the '8' or not.

The only time you "do not" lose is if you are playing in a league that has a rule to the contrary... i.e. as "Straight" from the BCA says.

  8. you scratch on the 8 ball you lose ,tell your bro to learn the rules before he picks up pool cue lol

  9. if you scratch wile shooting the 8ball you lose.

  10. check up BCA rules:

    4.20 LOSS OF GAME

A player loses the game by committing any of the following infractions:

    1. Fouls when pocketing the 8-ball (exception: see 8-Ball Pocketed On The Break).

  11. Unless otherwise agreed, any scratch on the 8-ball loses. In fact, making the 8 on the break and scratching also loses.

  12. Scratching on the eight ball is an automatic loss in the game of eight ball and eight ball related games such as one pocket etc regardless when it occurs...beginning or end of the game

  13. he lost

  14. If you scratch the cue and the only thing left is the eight ball you loose.
