Question:

8 month old has fever!?!?

We brought him to the doctor on friday, and she said that it could be roseola. He has had a fever for 4 days now, but is still eating well, sleeping, and playing. We have been using motrin for his fever, which brings it down. It got as high as 102.3. My question is, if we keep giving him motrin as reccomended, will the reduction in his temperature not kill the virus? Should we bring him to the emergency room? His bowel movement and urine movement is still the same, no problems there...

  1. If you're in Ontario, call a Tele-Health nurse for free:

    1-866-797-0000

Ask if you can rotate: Tylenol and Advil (work differently and you can overlap them if the fever rises before another dose is allowed).

  2. sounds like he may be teething. most infants get a temp, when this s happening. some even get a runny nose with it also. If you are worried, and in a sense, I would too, I would take him to the peds and hear what he says..

for a baby, its always wise to do the safe thing

  3. My pediatrician recommends alternating between Infant Motrin and Infant Tylenol for fever.  I have found this works wonders to bring it down.  If you don't know the proper dose for the Tylenol you could try to contact your ped. office.  Most have an on call dr. you can get in touch w/after hours.  If not you could try to call the ER but they might not give that info. over the phone without first seeing him.

I've been through this with the fevers over and over.  It's never easy.  It sounds like he's doing well though.  Just keep an eye on his temp, make sure he's eating, drinking, pooping & peeing.  If any of these change contact his dr. or take him to the ER.

Good luck ~ hope he's better soon!

  4. He does not need to go to the emergency room unless his temp hits 105.  Roseola is viral, there is nothing they can do for him anyways.  But, if his temp hits 105, then it may be bacterial.

My daughter had roseola at 6 months old.  If he has roseola, the fever should be breaking the next day or so and soon after he will break out in a rash all over his body.  My daughter had a rash from the top of her cheeks to the tops of her feet.  It didn't seem to bother her at all.  She was as happy as a clam.  Aside from the rash, she was perfectly healthy.  The rash will pass as early as 7 days but as long as 3 weeks.

    Good Luck.

  5. 102 temp means its bacterial not viral. give him fluids and wiping him down w damp cloth so the hydration keeps up. the bacterial will not die b/c of the fever it seems. just try to give him the motrin as directed and if the fever still persist than take him back to the doctor.

oh and its urine output not movement. but i like how u used it it makes sense
