i'm buying an hdtv for my room to watch tv and play xbox 360 on, is 8 ms response time too slow and going to create noticeable and annoying blur, or is this a decent rate?

  1. Response time has little to do with motion blur. Motion blur occurs because LCD HDTVs sample and hold their video images. What this means is that they update the screen with a frame and then leave that frame visible until the next frame is displayed. LCD TVs are the only TVs to use this technique. All other TVs allow the frame image to decay before the next imaged is flashed on the screen. Because our eyes and brain see this static image, yet from frame-to-frame objects shift position, our brain interprets this information and creates motion blur. Though we see the motion blur, you can not capture this blur with a camera (because it exists in our brains). The ONLY way to effectively reduce motion blur is buy a TV with a faster (120 Hz) refresh rate.

Also, look for a TV with a gaming mode if you are going to use this TV with your XBOX. All HDTVs buffer their video which cause video lag. Gaming modes reduce the buffering and, therefore, reduce the lag providing you a more real-time gaming experience.

  2. It should be OK I would go for a 5ms response time. But for games you want to have a high contrast ratio.
