I am applying for a year long program in Paris France. I know that visa applications, finding and apartment, and all that will take several months so I need to get started now. my french is decent, but I'm not comfortable handling a lot of the situation by myself ( getting an apartment, registering with police , etc) because of this I am considering hiring a relocation agency.

my main worry is this- my parents will be the ones paying for the apartment I and my boyfriend will be living in but they will not be moving with us. will this be a problem when finding an apartment? what should I be prepared for when I start my search? will the fact that I will be moving with my boyfriend make finding an apartment more difficult? is it legal (or acceptable to landlords) for my boyfriend and I to be living there without my parents who would be the ones actually paying for the apartment?

  1. At age 18 you are legally an adult in France. there ought to be no problems on that account.

If anything, the fact that your parents will be paying for the apartment will probably of some assurance to the Landlord (presuming that he makes arrangements for his rent payments directly with you parents.)

Your main problem will be finding an apartment that acceptable to you and that is also affordable.

Are you aware of the high cost of housing in Paris? What sort of a budget do you have for this stay in Paris?

  2. Hi,

I'm French and I live in Paris... The documents you must provide to the landlord are the following:

    1. Your ID / passport

    2. The 3 last salary sheets / pay slips of your parents (I don't know when you'll be moving to Paris but if you are to move to Paris this month, you must provide June / July / Aug pay slips

    3. A document proving that the address of your parents is correct (last phone bill, electricity bill etc.)

    4. A letter written by your parents stating that they will pay the rent for a year

    Some other advise:

    You'll have to pay:

    an one-month deposit

    one month rent in advance

if you get your apartment through a agency, you have to add the cost of the rent for the agency fees

Regarding the fact that you'll be leaving with your boyfriend, no problem at all: you're 18 and considered as an adult in France - Do not worry about this issue!!! Many French students live with their boy/girl firend and landlord do not care.

    a last tip:

Have a look on the following website to get an idea of the Paris market:

    www.pap.fr

    www.explorimmo.com

    www.seloger.com

Hope I've been helpful, do not hesitate to get back to me if you need some more info etc

    Anne
