80's or 90's amercian cop series?

Question

I am after the name of a amercian cop series where I recall his wife and son are murdered one night whilst out with him and he is also killed but unable to pass onto the afterlife. He then spends the nights walking the streets in a long coat cleaning up the streets of crime and looking for the person who killed them all. He was either a young San Francisco or LAPD cop but I cannot remember the name of the series or the actor. Anyone remember this series it was very good and shown late at night?
