assuming it's 80s

you want Madonna, Prince, Def Leppard, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Boy George, Men at Work, Tears for Fears, Whitney Houston, Cindy Lauper, Guns & Roses, MC Hammer, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson (this is a "must" not a "maybe").  Michael Jackson & Madonna sort of dominated the airwaves.

Big hair

Leggings with big tee shirts were very popular, stirrup pants, acid washed "anything" denim, high waisted straight leg or tapered jeans (for both guys and girls).  Punk looks were sort of "in" at that time, sort of a modified gothic look is what i would say.

Disco was kind of a big thing, where people would just go out to dance to all the music i listed above.

Guys wore short shorts (eeww).

There was this disco globe thing that seemed to be everywhere for dancing.
