80% of the UK pop. claim to be Christian, yet the Bible EXPLICITLY forbids homosexuality and feminism. Can...?

"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" Leviticus 18:22

"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. " Leviticus 20:13

**New Testament**:

"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind" Corinthians 6:9

(Paul saying that g**s will not go to heaven)

Romans 1:26-32 is even clearer but it is a long passage

  1. The bible is one of the cleverest books written . It can be twisted to validate any point that you wish to make . Like the catholic church it is time it was modernised in its approach to todays way of life .

Hmm but then the bible says "an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth" yet also says "thou shalt not kill".  You can read anything you want into the bible.  Christ (and the religion is named after him) made it clear that Heaven was open to everyone and he never spoke out against anything other than injustice.  The only true word of God in the Bible is the commandments that he wrote and gave to Moses so unless it says it in there then God didn't give a tuppeny d**n about it - and he is a higher authority than anyone else.

  5. If you take all this stuff as the immutable word of God rather than the ancient prejudices of a variety of long-dead people, you should surely believe all the other c**p written therein:

    "Anyone who does work on it (The Sabbath) should be cut off from his father's kin" exodus 31:14  Has this happened a lot since the advent of Sunday trading?

    "Such slaves as you have, male or female, should come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves" leviticus 25:44 So, a good Christian like yourself must still believe in slavery provided we pop over to France on the ferry to buy them.

    "Every creature in the water that has neither fins nor scales shall be vermin to you" leviticus 11: 12 so the prawn sandwiches are off, then?

    Well, don't complain to me if you don't believe in this c**p - HOW CAN YOU BE A CHRISTIAN AND NOT BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE?  So put the lobster down and get yourself some slaves NOW, but don't do it on Sunday, or you'll never see your granddad again.

  6. There's all kinds of crazy stuff in the Old Testament. "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" for example. Christians follow the teachings of Jesus, not the stuff in the Old Testament or the ramblings of some sexually repressed nutjob like Paul.

    but regarding interpreting the Bible literally, you may be a Christian but if you are also a human being with human emotions, that has to be taken into account

    if the Bible is the word of God, but it was written and interpretted by Man, then surely it is fundamentally flawed, as man is by nature imperfect.

    If the Bible was written at a time that lets say s*x with minors was permissable, then surely that was permissable by God and are we supposed to live by the same standards now.

    I have just been watching Battlestar Galactica, where the survival of the human race was at stake, the president decrees that abortion should be illegal as the priority is to build human numbers - change that to homosexuality for the same reason - you can see that different societies under different laws and pressures will have differing social mores and priorities - if everyone died at 23 years old, and the priority was to procreate, then s*x with under 16's would become common practice and we would probably be told that masturbation was a waste of precious life (similar as in the Bible)

    As I said - I am an athiest, but the undercurrent of all religious texts seems to be that all humans are flawed and we are being punished and tested in this life , so that we are ultimately judged when we go to the next life

    I dont think that you can interpret any of these things literally, put it another way - would you like to live in a world where all religious individuals interpretted religious texts to the letter ?

  8. It maybe explicit, but those passages are hardly central to the christian faith. (its not a commandment, or even said by jesus)

    It is perfectly possible to be a christian and not follow the myriad precscriptions in leviticus.

  9. It is an impossibility to be a Christian and not believe in the Bible.  A true Christian is a Child of God and believes that the Bible is the Word of God given to us by inspiration of the Holy Spirit.  I can not see how a person can claim to be a Christian and still not believe in the Bible.

  11. Most of your 80% just say they're Christian for lack of any thought as to their real position.  Only a small part of the UK population takes religion seriously these days.

  12. I'm not a Christian but if Christians don't believe in the Bible they are just people doing what THEY think is right in THEIR opinion.

    If everyone is just deciding for themselves, how can it be called a religion?

  13. In Leviticus it also says we can rape and kill slaves - the bible is messed up.

    Levitcus 19:20 "If a man has s*x with a slave girl he is not to be punished. She is a slave."

    "They waged war as god had commanded them and killed every male. But they kept the women as captives and took their wealth as spoil. Moses was enraged. 'So you spared the women? Kill every woman who has had sexual intercourse and kill every little boy, but keep the virgin girls for yourself. Divide them up evenly.'" Num. 31:7, 14

  15. That's just it. Those 80% take from the Bible what pertains to their wants and they ignore what's left that might make their life inconvenient.

    I think that you'll find a good proportion of those would say that they are "Church Of England".....which probably means that they are not Christian at all...

    Claiming to be CofE is a "cop out" 1st answer - most of the claimants won't have been to church etc in the last 20 years..yet they always have been CofE and always will be!

    In answer to your question... no, you can't but most claim to be!
