80 year old mom who can't control tantrums of mentally retarded 43 year old daughter. What to do?

After this girl somehow graduated from high school, she was never taken in to learn independent living skills. Want to hear from someone with similar experiences.

Mom, you need a break.  Why are you still living with this daily?  What about resources like adult daycare or a group home environment?  You could also help her get more involved in the world and feel she is doing something with a purpose.  Try getting her to do volunteer work at a hospital or something.  You need to let her go and experience the world.  She has tantrums because internally she wants to feel a sense of purpose and importance and she can't if you won't give her some purpose.  There are options.  Please try something or both of you will be unhealthy.

I would call the Div of Family Services in your area, or what ever it's called. I would speak to a case worker about the situation and the fact that you need help NOW. They do have places of Group Living for people that are mentally changelleged. The often have their own room and then have a house parent to watch over them. Most of the time unless they are receiving SSI they help them obtain employment and help with live skills. If Social Services can't/won't help I would call the Dept. of Mental Health and stress the need for help immediately. Good Luck, Has she ever hurt you?

Have you tried to work with ARC?  This is a tough one to do by yourself, and being that she is now 43, it will be tougher on her as well. is "Mom" the soul caretaker of this women? At 80, hopefully some planning has went into what is going to happen when Mom is no longer with her.

She will need to have assisted living of some sort. Please contact ARC.
