I'm 14 and on varsity track. I normally run the 400, and my PR is 64.3 seconds. However, my coach wants me to run the 800 this meet and get a 2:30 or below (2:34 at the absolute slowest)... i'm in shape, and i think that i can do it. however, are there any tips for while i'm running? like when to go fast, slow down, cruise, how to breathe...etc?

if i run a good time then i'll be on the 4x800 relay and we can set a school record! so i really need advice please! thanks!!!!

  1. if you run a 64 400, then a 2:30 is about right. your split should be around 75 or 76 seconds for the first lap. get out that 1st lap, but not too fast, and coast the second one. the last 150 meters, finish strong with a nice stride

  2. If you think that you are going your own pace, gofaster, because you are really slowing down... :)

    GOOD LUCK!!

Be sure to kick it in gear in the last 100m!!!!

    :)

  3. since i have your 400 pr i can do a little math and tell you what you should be able to run. its called the 10% rule and it tells you what your splits should be for each lap. its law for me and it works all the time.

    your pr is 64.3

    add 10% to your pr

    64.3 x 1.10 = 70.73

70.73 is your first lap split

    for your second lap,

    add 10% to 70.73

    70.73 x 1.10 = 77.803

77.803 is your second lap split

    now add both laps together

    70.73 + 77.803 = 148.533 seconds

take that and put it into minutes and you can run your 800 in 2:28.5 minutes. dont get me wrong, itll be hard since this formula tells you what your body can do at its full potential assuming that your 400 is at your full potential. but go out and hit these splits if your comfortable with it and im sure that youll pull through.

p.s. i use this for my 800 splits and it works great. my track coach taught it to me.

  4. Well, I'm 14 as well and I also run 400m in varisty track. I run somewhere between a 63-64 as well. My usual breathing tecnique is in the nose out the mouth. Drive the knees as high as you possibly can. I'm guessing you use track spikes which really help. When I run, I use the curves of the track as resting points and the straight-aways as sprints. One major key is that you should always get on the starting like already sweating. That definitely helps your running. Carbs, bananas, and water are key! Hope this helps, good luck.

  5. The key in the 800 i find is the amount of focus you have.  Trust me running is sooo much more mental than people give it credit for, if you go into the race focused and know you can get a time then you will.....Just sit behind someone you konw who has a similar time that you want to hit and just FOCUS on not letting them get away from you....It works i dropped 12 seconds inthe 800 in one race
