Question:

800 meter run for a state track meet tomorrow?

Hi, I'm 13, and I'm competing in the Hershey track and field state meet tomorrow.

One of my events is the 800. I have never run this competitively before. At local, I was tired from my mile run, but I still managed to come in before the girl I was running against. At district, I was the only runner (probably because the girl in the younger age group passed out.)

Please give me advice on how to run this. I've been practicing, but can normally not get faster than 3 min. I know that's pathetic, so...

Also, does anyone know about the selection process for this thing? What do I have to do to make it to Nationals?

Also, nutrition would be helpful. I'm having breakfast 3 hours before the run-a banana milk smoothie. What else can I eat?

  1. Read this article, it tells you what to do before, during, and after the 800m.

  2. From what I understand of the qualifying:

They compare the top results at State from 4 states in your area and the top performer (I believe it's just the one) may be invited to Pennsylvania.

So, if you win your state, you would still have to beat the performance of the winners of 3 other states in order to be invited to nationals.

And I would hesitate to have a smoothie for breakfast.  Bagel, dry cereal, toast, plain pancake...etc.

  3. stay as close as you can to the lines when making the turns it saves energy, get a good jump as soon as the gun is fired, make sure you strech very well, see how fast the other girls are going and just stay within reaching distance, save some energy and sprint the last hundred meters

  4. I would definitely ear a bowl of oatmeal about four hours before the race. It helps keep you energized so you won't get tired. Right before the race drink about five sips of gatorade.

As for the race pace yourself. In the beginning try to keep up with them for a while and then settle into a nice pace behind someone that you are comfortable with. It's always good to save a kick for the end. Remember to run your race. Trust me after it's over you'll be really tired for a while but if you do your best it's always worth it. G'Luck!

  5. 3 min isnt that bad. cuz if u did the mile and added on abot

30 sec. its onlly 6 min and 30 sec. which is definately better than I can do... and id just do the smoothie for breakfast. stretch alot. before the race, run 1 lap around the track to get warmed up. but dont go fast. I got third place for the 100 meter at district this yr. kinda sux. i only got 15.4 sec. but for the first round i got 13.5 sec and i was rlly mad. well anyways good luck.
