the shortest middle-distance or the longest sprint?

to me i consider it a mid-sprint event.. because its similar to the 400m event... and now days it needs speed, strength and endurance...

Shortest middle distance-

At the high school level, most of the top 800 hundred runners also do the mile or other longer distance events. A few are sprinters who have above average endurance. However, at the elite level the top 800 runners usually are also among the top 1500 runners. You don't see Jeremy Wariner running the 800.

so for a young age the id say middle distance

but olympic or college level then longest sprint

The 800 is actually considered a sprint. Like the 400 has to be ran with a little pacing. The 800 is used as speed work for distance programs also.

800 meters is 0.5 of a mile.  I say it's about middle distance on a track. I'm referring you of doing track.
