My router have the option to have one or another.

It is a belkin wireless pre N router.

My laptop is very far away (120m through 2 walls and i get only 1-3bars/5) and the maximum in the router specifications is 300meters.

I was wondering if switching to 802.11g only would boost the range.

Thanks for you help.

(i have a pre-n wireless card by the way)

  1. g only won't boost the range, however, g only does have a couple minor security advantages.  (Assuming you ARE running any security.)

If you don't need B, turn it off.

  2. you could also try to get a 802.11gn router, it's a little bit more expensive but its range is a bit over 1000ft. and it goes through walls just fine.

  3. switching the band from N to G or B is not going to have any effect on the quality of the connection
