85' Volvo 740 Turbo Speedometer issues?

I own an 85 Volvo 740 turbo wagon, lately(as in the past month) the speedometer has a tendency to not work a little while after start-up, later on, the speedo works fine(the odometer by the way works just fine w/ or w/o the speedo working) usually all i have to is take the car past 40mph and the speedo jumps back to life, but at first start up, and some times at speeds under 20mph it doesn't want to work, what gives?

  1. Hi

That is a common problem to those vehicles.

The Speedometer circuit board has developed a bad spot on one of the solder joints.

I have repaired many many volvos for this same problem.

The speedometer cluster must be removed and repaired.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

  2. Get the sensor and cabling checked.  The sensor is on the rear axle.
