My 85 Mazda rx7 starts, but when I accelerate it shuts off. The engine has not been in use for a while but the engine is in good shape. What could be the problem?

  1. Does it stall or shut off? That's very important in offering diagnosis. Is it dying out as you start moving or does the engine stop dead? Will it run to a certain RPM?

Is this a13B or 12A? Both were available for that year depending on market.

I'd need more information to help, ignition, fuel, sensor, hard to say.

  2. Understand that cars in the mid 80s and older dont run off of Ethanol that they put into gas now a days try getting gas at somewhere that dosent add ethanol to the gas or even try finding a place that has no ethanol in the gas. Ethanol damages fuel systems in older cars, they cant take it. Ethanol also burns faster to and it dosnt produce as much power as regular gasoline.

  3. Sounds to me like you're not getting enough fuel. Check your fuel pump. If the car hasn't been started for some time, your filter or pump may be clogged.

Nice choice in vehicle though. :) I LOVE the rotary!
