I know they made buckshot, but I heard a kid used supermag 3.5 inch duck shot. I didn't think they made duckshot, or do they?

  1. The kid in question was referring to using a Remington 870 Express Super Magnum pump shotgun.  It holds 2 3/4", 3", and 3 1/2" shotshells.  The shot he used would be steel or other non-toxic shot approved by the USFWS, for use when waterfowl hunting.  Lead shot was banned over 20 years ago to stop lead poisoning of waterfowl and other birds associated with water.  The size of the shot was more than likely heavy; something in the range of BB shot to 4 shot.  Some people call that duck shot, even though it is not just for ducks.

  2. first of all, it is simply 870

unlike say a .45acp where the .45 harkens to 0.45 inches in diameter, 870 is just a number, just like the Xbox360, 360 it is just a number.

When the person said duck shot he was referring to the use of non-toxic shot.

See, for hunting waterfowl, you can't use lead shot anymore, you must use non-toxic.  In most cases this is steel shot.  However, steel shot is inferior to lead, as steel is much lighter, hence the same weight of shot will have much more surface area and slow down in flight more, and each shot will have individually less weight, and be less able to penetrate.

Eventually people developed Tungsten and Bismuth as non-toxic lead replacements that were much closer to the density of lead and hence performed better, but they are much more expensive due to using exotic metals
