Buying an 870 with a slug barrel (the one it come with from the factory). Since slugs have gotten so expensive I want to narrow it down before I buy a bunch to test. Any suggestions?

  1. I shoot an 870 with a slug barrel (fully rifled).  You don't mention if yours is fully rifled or has the rifled choke tube, but I'm assuming it is fully rifled.  My shotgun shoots the Remington Copper Solid Sabots very well.  I can shoot a 3" group at 100 yards (my 870 is scoped).  This combo allowed me to make a very clean, one-shot kill at 92 paces a couple of years ago.  I've also had pretty good success with Federal Sabots shooting a Barnes slug.

Stick with sabots, but you'll have to spend some time at the range (and spend a few bucks) to find out which your gun shoots best.  Every barrel is different.  Have fun.

    Shoot often and shoot well.

  2. I hate to say it but your going to have to invest in some shells to see which is going to work best in you shotgun. Just buy one box of each brand of shells and see which ones "group" the best. I'm not saying they have to be dead on target just that they shoot the tightest groups because the rest can by adjust by moving the sights

  3. winchester has a good xp3 area slug

  4. There are 2 schools of thought concerning shotgun slug guns......  I am of the old school where my slug gun is a 24 inch smooth bore (no choke and no rifling)....... I use foster type slugs 2 3/4 inch..... I have had NO problems taking deer to 100 yards doing it this way.......   The other school of thinking is using a shotgun with a rifled barrel and using either Foster type slugs or Sabots.....  I will agree a rifled barrel firing 3 inch sabots with increase your range to 150 yards and some claim shots to 200 yards.....  It all gets down to what distance you want to take your shots at.....  Some folks seem to have the idea foster type slugs aren't accurate or dont have much reach???  With a little practice I find it no problem to hit anything at 100 yards with open iron sights.... I practice by shooting at a 12 inch steel plate hung from chains at 100 yards...... This is what works for me!!  The only reason I never went the rifled barrel sabot route is because with my old eyes I cant see much beyond 100 yards and I dont like scopes on shotguns......
